Fence replacement Program

The Berkeley Fire Department is piloting a new Fence Replacement Program to help Berkeley property owners replace combustible wood fences and gates that are attached to structures in Zone 0, the first 0–5 feet around a home.
Eligible participants may receive reimbursement for up to 50% of approved fence or gate replacement costs, up to $2,500.
The replacement fence or gate must comply with the City of Berkeley EMBER code. Residents are responsible for selecting a contractor and completing the work.
Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must:
Complete the online application.
Have received a full-access defensible space inspection within the last 6 months.
Be in compliance with defensible space requirements and have no outstanding future action items.
Have a current combustible or wooden fence or gate attached to a structure in Zone 0.
Sign the participation agreement and Right of Entry agreement.
Submit required documentation, including invoices, proof of payment, and photos of completed work.
Complete a final inspection.

What is the process?
Submit the online application.
Berkeley Fire staff will review the application for eligibility.
If eligible, the resident will complete the Participation Agreement and Right of Entry agreement through DocuSign.
The resident selects a contractor and completes the approved fence or gate replacement.
The resident submits required documentation, including invoices, proof of payment, and photos.
Berkeley Fire completes a final inspection.
Approved reimbursement is processed.
